Whether you wanted it or not, Beyoncé has dropped her 6th studio album titled, "Lemonade," and whether you've heard it or not, you can not ignore the growing conversation that is surrounding this new album. Now it is typical of people to neglect the whole body of work and to only pick on a few sound bytes to feed their souls. However, I feel it is Beyoncé's body of work that has left some confused as to who she really is.
Beyoncé is a self proclaimed feminist. However, with the recent cheating allegations that surround her relationship with husband, rapper Jay-Z, it leaves many feminist wondering, "Can you get cheated on, accept that person back, and still call yourself a feminist?" I do not believe that being cheated on and accepting that person back makes you less of a feminist, especially if that person over time really works to gain back that trust they broke in the first place. I personally would have a hard time accepting cheating but would not judge anyone who did take someone back for their one time indiscretions. Now, if a woman was getting cheated on repeatedly and constantly taking the person back, then I would have to think about stripping them of their feminist card. Lemonade is not the first or only time Beyoncé has talked about being cheated on and here are some songs to name a few:
Beautiful Liar
Best Thing I Never Had
Broken-Hearted Girl
Don't Hurt Yourself
If I Were a Boy
Irreplaceable
Me, Myself, and I
Resentment
Ring The Alarm
Why Don't You Love Me
Let's Start Over
Even "Single Ladies," seems a bit off where Beyoncé urges ladies to dump their boyfriends if they don't propose, as if a ring, marriage, and being an extension of a man trumps love and commitment which is simply not true. You can feel very single and be in a relationship and as she should know, you can get the wedding ring and still get cheated on. Now, we know Beyoncé doesn't write her own material and whether all these songs pertain to her life or not, there is something in her that likes to tap into a cheated on, battered woman audience. Even in her songs about love, they seems to always diminish her feminist role as she often feels like she needs to be submissive and cater to her man in order to be seen as a good woman or wife, which is why it could hurt ten time more when that love and affections is not reciprocated or broken.
So the question remains is Beyoncé a feminist and do you think women who continuously get cheated on can be called a feminist?
